Edificio Copan, considered one of the urban symbols of Sao Paulo, Brazil. a residential project combined with a commercial floor, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and Carlos Lemos (1954-1966). It is 140 meters high, has 37 floors, 6 blocks with 1,160 apartments and 5,000 residents. covers an area of 120 thousand sm. From the first moment until today Copan has gone through several incarnations. Today, people from different social classes and occupations live in Edificio Copan.

ResponsAbility is a project with two meanings: the first, Response-Ability - the ability to respond. and the second Responsibility - state of being responsible. The project aims to realize the ability of architecture to respond in real time to changing needs, based on the claim that architecture is not something that is built and forgotten - the role of the architect is to take responsibility for the project over time. Edificio  Copan is too big and clumsy to live as it is, but it can't die either - it's very hard to delete it. A building of this size in the heart of the city of São Paulo in order to continue living and functioning must know how to respond to social changes and housing patterns.

A look into social networks shows that there is a big buzz around Edificio Copan. It is an icon. Lots of people come to the site, take selfies with the building and upload it to social media. Scrolling through Instagram shows endless information. The posts and stories used in this project as a research tool that helped us find out what is really happening today in the Copan. Through a network of virtual agents, we created a monitor for Copan that collects the data and updates live. The monitor is a surfaced image of the building according to typical blocks and floors, where each pixel represents an apartment.

The monitor show a high percentage of vacant apartments for rent and sale today in Edificio Copan. Also, while scrolling through Instagram, we were exposed to the Airbnb trend in Copan. Many vacant apartments have been redesigned with colorful and Instagrammable interiors. Today Copan has four main Airbnb companies  that operate through Instagram.

Therefor the tenants of Edificio Copan consist of a permanent community and a tourist community, "Airbnb guests", that is constantly changing. In this project, the vacancy spaces are used as an infrastructure for an immediate architectural response, to react to changing social needs and to encourage trends. The Airbnb phenomenon preserves the 'liveliness' of Copan. The unoccupied apartments are used to create spaces that provide services to support Airbnb such as a shared lobby, a shared kitchen and a lounge. Today, in addition, Copan contains only residences and commerce without community programs. Therefore, by unifying the vacancy spaces and providing dedicated access through the unused service elevators, there is a new public space for the community to use (such as a photography studio, a recording studio, and even kindergartens).
